Gas log fires, serviced and repaired the right way
Gas log fires are a beautiful way to heat a room, and they are more involved than they look. A real flame, a flue, glass, ceramic logs and embers, and a pilot or electronic ignition all have to work together safely. When one part drifts out, you get a fire that will not light, sooty glass, or a lazy yellow flame. That is where we come in.
We are a local, in-house team of licensed technicians working across the Macedon Ranges every week, from Sunbury and Gisborne through Macedon and Woodend to Kyneton, Romsey and Lancefield. Whether your fire needs its regular service, has stopped lighting, or the glass keeps blackening, we diagnose it properly and give you an upfront price before any work starts.
Common gas log fire faults we fix
- Will not ignite or light. You press the button or turn the dial and nothing happens, or it lights then drops out.
- Pilot will not stay lit. The pilot lights but goes out as soon as you let go, often a thermocouple or pilot fault.
- Yellow or lazy flame. A healthy flame burns mostly blue at the base. A lazy yellow flame points to poor combustion and needs attention.
- Glass going black. Sooty or blackened glass means the fire is not burning cleanly.
- Fan or blower noise. Rattling, grinding or whirring from the fan usually means a worn motor.
- Remote or controls playing up. The remote or wall control will not talk to the fire, or settings will not hold.
- Weak or no heat. The fire looks fine but the room never warms the way it used to.
- Any smell of gas. Turn it off and make it safe first, then call us.
What a gas log fire service includes
- Burner and injector clean and a combustion check.
- Pilot, thermocouple and igniter test, the usual ignition culprits.
- Ember and log re-set to the manufacturer’s layout for a clean, realistic flame.
- Glass clean and a seal and gasket check.
- Flue check and carbon monoxide safety checks.
- Fan or blower inspection where fitted, plus controls and remote test.
- A clear report on the fire’s condition, with an upfront price for any repairs.
Frequent repairs include pilot and thermocouple replacements, faulty igniters, blocked or worn injectors, gas valve faults, fan and blower motors, and remote or control board issues. We diagnose first and fix on the spot wherever the part is on the van.
Why the flue and combustion matter
A gas log fire with a blocked flue or poor combustion can produce carbon monoxide, an odourless gas that is genuinely dangerous. Sooty glass or a lazy yellow flame can be early warning signs. That is why a proper service looks at the flue and combustion rather than just cleaning the glass, and why Energy Safe Victoria recommends having gas heaters serviced at least every two years.
Repair, or time for a new fire?
A good service or repair keeps most gas log fires going for many years, and we always try to repair before we suggest replacing. If a fire is cracked, unsafe, or so old that parts no longer exist, replacement is the honest call and we will tell you straight. If you are rethinking the whole home’s heating at the same time, the Victorian Energy Upgrades program may apply to a move from gas to an efficient reverse cycle system, and our gas ducted heating page covers the whole-home options.
Rinnai and other major brands
Service and repair for Rinnai and other major gas log fire brands
Rinnai fires are among the most common in Ranges living rooms, and our gasfitters know them well: the 650 and 750 in most homes, the wider 950 and 1250 in larger rooms. A service takes the fire back to a clean, safe burn: burner and injectors cleaned, the log set and embers put back to the maker's layout so the flame picture looks the way it should, glass and seals checked, flue and combustion tested. The same applies to Real Flame, Jetmaster, Escea, Regency and the other brands we see every winter.
- Fault finding, servicing and maintenance by our in-house gasfitters
- Log and ember layout reset to the manufacturer's pattern
- Upfront price before any repair starts
Controls and remotes
Remote, thermostat and ignition faults
A modern Rinnai fire is run from a remote like the Ember: flame height, fan, a room temperature to hold and a timer. When the remote stops talking to the fire, the fire lights and drops out, or the thermostat no longer holds the room, the fault is usually in the receiver, the ignition or the pilot assembly rather than the remote itself. We diagnose which on the visit and carry the common parts.

Questions we get asked
How often should a gas log fire be serviced?
Energy Safe Victoria recommends having gas heaters serviced at least every two years. A fire that is used every night through a Ranges winter benefits from an annual clean and check.
Why is the glass on my gas log fire going black?
Sooty or blackened glass means the fire is not burning cleanly. It is usually a combustion, log placement or injector problem and it needs a service rather than just a clean, because the same fault can affect the flue.
The pilot lights but goes out when I let go. What is wrong?
Usually the thermocouple or the pilot assembly. It is one of the most common gas log fire repairs and is normally a quick fix once diagnosed.
Do you install new gas log fires?
No. We service, repair and fault-find gas log fires; we do not supply or install new ones. If your fire is beyond economical repair we will tell you straight, and if you are rethinking the home's heating we can advise on gas ducted or reverse cycle options.
I can smell gas near the fire. What should I do?
Turn the fire off, turn off the gas at the meter if you can, open windows and do not operate electrical switches near the smell. Call your gas distributor's emergency line first, then call us for the repair once it has been made safe.
