The MRGA Standard

What a properly designed and installed system actually involves

Two quotes can name the same equipment and differ by thousands of dollars. The difference is in the assessment, the design, the ductwork, the commissioning and who turns up. This is how we work, so you know what you are comparing.

The process

Seven steps, every job

From the first conversation to the follow-up after completion.

  1. We assess properly

The home, the floor plan, the construction and how you live in it.

  2. We design properly

Capacity, ductwork, airflow, outlet placement, return air and zoning, for this house.

  3. We explain your options

Suitable systems, what changes between them, and what the quote includes.

  4. Our in-house team installs properly

No subcontracted crews. The people who quoted the job do the job.

  5. We commission and test everything

Airflow, zones, drains, controls and safety devices, checked before we leave.

  6. We show you how to use it

The controller, the zones and the habits that make the system work well.

  7. We stand behind the result

A 9 Year Labour and Workmanship Warranty on our installation work, and a local team that is still here.

Why quotes differ

A heating and cooling system is a major investment in the home

It is normal to get more than one quote. What we want is for you to understand what you are comparing: which system, why it was recommended, how it will work in your house, what the installation includes and what stands behind the workmanship.

Quotes for the same house can differ for real reasons: whether the system was sized from the home or from a rule of thumb, whether the ductwork is new and insulated or old and reused, how the airflow and return air were designed, whether the zones were set up around how you live, the make and model of the equipment, how the installation is commissioned, and who is accountable afterwards.

We will talk you through the suitable options and explain what changes between them. Our quotes describe the scope and the system rather than itemising every component, and they state plainly what is and is not included.

Technical proof

Design

Sizing, ductwork, airflow and zoning decided before a unit is chosen

Sized for your home, not a rule of thumb

We size heating and cooling from the home: floor area, ceiling heights, insulation, glazing, orientation and how the rooms are used. An oversized unit short-cycles and an undersized one runs flat out on the coldest and hottest days, which is exactly when you need it.

New, correctly insulated ductwork on every ducted reverse cycle installation

Ducted systems live or die by the ducts. A new ducted reverse cycle installation gets new ductwork, sized for the system's airflow, insulated to the current standard, sealed at every joint and supported so it does not sag or kink in the roof. We do not reuse old gas-heating ductwork for a new ducted reverse cycle system. When a gas ducted heater is replaced like for like, the existing ducts can stay where we have inspected them and they are suitable.

Return air and outlets placed for even comfort

Outlet positions, return-air size and location decide whether the back bedrooms are as comfortable as the living room. We design outlet placement and return air for the floor plan and confirm it with you before installation day.

Zoning and sensors where they help

Zoning lets you heat or cool the rooms you are using. Where a system is zoned we set the zones around how the home is lived in, and place temperature sensors where they read the room rather than a hallway or a draught.

Installation

The parts of the job you never see, done to the standard

Outdoor unit positioned properly

Clearances for airflow and service access, a level base or bracket, noise considered for you and the neighbours, and a position that keeps pipe runs sensible. It is the difference between a unit that lasts and one that struggles every summer.

Electrical supply done by licensed electricians

Reverse cycle systems need the right circuit, cable size and isolator at the outdoor unit, installed to AS/NZS 3000 by a licensed electrician with a certificate of electrical safety. We tell you up front if the switchboard needs work, rather than discovering it on installation day.

Refrigerant work done by licensed technicians

Pipework is brazed, pressure-tested and evacuated before charging, and the charge is set to the manufacturer's specification. Our technicians hold the ARCtick refrigerant handling licence the law requires.

Condensate drained, not dripped

Drains are run with fall to a proper discharge point and tested with water before we leave, so you never find a stain on a ceiling or a puddle under a unit.

Gas and flue work to the standard

Gas heaters are installed and commissioned by licensed gasfitters: correct gas supply and pressure, flue routed and terminated to the standard, combustion checked at commissioning, and a compliance certificate issued where required.

Water and drain done properly on evaporative coolers

A watertight roof penetration, a properly connected water supply with an accessible isolation point, a drain that actually drains, and pads and distribution set up so the unit cools evenly from day one.

Technical proof

Hand-over and accountability

Commissioned, explained and backed

Controller set up and explained

We configure the controller for your system and zones, then show you how to use it before we leave. A system you understand is a system you use well.

Commissioned and checked, not just switched on

Every installation is run, tested and checked against the design: airflow at the outlets, temperatures, controls, drains and safety devices. We do not leave until it is working the way it was quoted.

Tidy finish and service access

Penetrations sealed and flashed, pipework capped and clipped, grilles straight, the site left clean, and the equipment positioned so it can be serviced without pulling the house apart.

One in-house team, and we stand behind the work

The technicians who quote your job install it and are still here afterwards. Our installation workmanship is backed by the 9 Year Labour & Workmanship Warranty, with manufacturer warranties covering the equipment.

Whole-home systems

How a ducted job runs

The same sequence applies to ducted reverse cycle and VEU gas to electric conversions. Every ducted reverse cycle installation gets new, correctly insulated ductwork.

  1. Enquiry

Tell us about the home and what you want it to do.

  2. Assessment

A site assessment or floor-plan review, and a conversation about how you actually live in the house: which rooms you use, where it gets hot or cold, how you want it zoned.

  3. Design

The system is designed around that: capacity, new insulated ductwork, outlet placement, return air, zoning and controls.

  4. Options and quote

We talk you through the suitable system options, explain what changes between them, and give you a written quote.

  5. Installation

Our own in-house team installs it, on a booked date, with new correctly insulated ductwork.

  6. Commissioning

Airflow, zoning, drainage, controls and safety devices are checked before we call it finished.

  7. Handover

We show you how to use the system and the controller, then follow up after completion.

Factory-trained dealers

Trained by the manufacturers, buying direct

We are factory-trained dealers for ActronAir, Brivis and Rinnai and purchase equipment directly from these manufacturers.

We also install, service and repair all major heating and cooling brands.

Accountability

9Year Labour & Workmanship Warranty

It applies to the installation work our own team does. Equipment is covered by the manufacturer's warranty, repairs and servicing carry their own workmanship warranty, and pre-existing or reused components are not covered by the nine years.

Comparing quotes

Questions worth asking every installer

  • How was the capacity worked out for this house?
  • Is the ductwork new? What size and insulation?
  • Where does the return air go, and how big is it?
  • How is the system zoned, and where do the sensors sit?
  • Will the refrigerant lines be pressure-tested and evacuated?
  • What does commissioning involve, and will I be shown how to use it?
  • Who turns up on the day, and who do I call in five years?

Our written quote answers every one of those for your home. Read how the standard applies to ducted installations, VEU gas to electric conversions, evaporative changeovers and gas heater replacements.
