Gas ducted heating in the Ranges
Winter in the Macedon Ranges is long and cold, and gas ducted heating is still the most common way homes here stay warm: a gas heater in the roof or outside, insulated ducts to every room, one thermostat and a house that is warm from the first frost in May to the last in October. When it is designed and maintained properly it is quiet, quick and comfortable. When it is not, it is noisy, uneven and expensive to run.

What we do
Service and safety checks. Energy Safe Victoria recommends servicing gas heaters at least every two years, and a proper service means a heat exchanger inspection and carbon monoxide safety checks, not just a filter clean. Book a gas ducted heating service.
Repairs. Heater not starting, cycling on and off, blowing cold air, flashing a fault code, tripping the power or smelling of gas. We diagnose on the first visit and carry common parts for Brivis, Rinnai, Braemar and Bonaire heaters. Book a repair. Replacement and changeover. When a heater has reached the end of its life you have more options than you did ten years ago: a like-for-like gas heater, a Braemar Dominator direct replacement, or a whole-home move to ducted reverse cycle under the Victorian Energy Upgrades program. New installations. For homes adding gas ducted heating for the first time we design the heater size, duct layout and outlet positions for the floor plan, then install and commission as one job.
Brands
Most gas ducted heaters in the Ranges are Brivis, Rinnai, Braemar or Bonaire. We service and repair all of them. For new heaters we install Brivis and Rinnai; we are factory-trained dealers for both and purchase equipment directly from the manufacturers. That matters for a replacement, because the heater has to be matched to the existing flue, gas supply and duct system, and a heater that is simply dropped onto old ductwork rarely performs the way the brochure promised.
The ductwork question
A gas ducted heater is only as good as the ducts and outlets it feeds. Crushed ducts, missing insulation, undersized returns and outlets in the wrong rooms are behind most complaints about uneven heating, and they are usually invisible from inside the house. Every replacement quote we do includes a look at the ductwork, and if it needs replacing we say so and show you why. If it is sound, we reuse it. We do not replace ductwork for the sake of it, and we do not connect new equipment to ductwork that will hold it back.
Thinking about going electric?
Many customers replacing a gas heater ask whether now is the time to switch to ducted reverse cycle. Sometimes it is, particularly if the home also needs cooling or the household is eligible under the VEU program. Sometimes a new gas heater is the better answer for the house and the budget. Warm floors and a whole house heated at once
Gas ducted heating is what most Ranges homes were built with: warm air through floor or ceiling outlets, the whole house heated quickly and held there on a frosty morning. When it is serviced and the ductwork is sound, it is quiet, even and easy to live with.

When a heater is due for replacement and gas remains the right answer for the home, we recommend the Brivis StarPro six-star heater, with Rinnai as the other option. External units sit against the side of the house; internal units go in the roof space. The choice comes down to access, flue routing and where the ducts run.

What a service checks and what a repair fixes
Burner, heat exchanger, fan, filters, controls and safety devices. A service checks all of them, inspects the heat exchanger and tests for carbon monoxide. Repairs are mostly ignition, gas valve, fan motor, control board and sensor faults, and our vans carry the common parts.
Zoning
Heat the rooms you are using
A zoned heater warms the living areas by day and the bedrooms at night instead of the whole house all the time, which is the biggest single saving available on a gas bill without giving up comfort. Zoning can be added to many existing systems and is designed in on every new one.
Controls
A controller you can actually use
A modern Brivis heater runs from the Brivis Touch controller on the wall, with the same controls on your phone through the Brivis app: temperature, timers, zones and, where the home also has a Brivis evaporative cooler, the cooling as well. Rinnai heaters have their own controller. Either way we set it up at handover and show you how it works.
Installation
The roof space is where the job is won or lost
Ductwork that is sized, insulated, sealed and supported, outlets placed for even heat, a flue routed and terminated to the standard, and a commissioning check at every outlet. On a like-for-like replacement the existing ducts stay where we have inspected them and they are suitable; where they are not, we say so.

Questions we get asked
How long does a gas ducted heater last?
Fifteen to twenty years is common for a heater that has been serviced. Heat exchangers, fans and controls wear at different rates, so a service that checks the heat exchanger is the best way to know where an older heater is up to.
How often should gas ducted heating be serviced?
Energy Safe Victoria recommends having gas heaters serviced at least every two years, and older heaters or heaters that work hard through a Ranges winter benefit from an annual check. A proper service inspects the heat exchanger and includes carbon monoxide safety checks as well as cleaning and tuning the heater.
Should I replace my gas ducted heater with another gas heater or go electric?
It depends on the house, your gas connection, whether you also need cooling, and whether the Victorian Energy Upgrades program applies to you. We install both, so we will give you a straight comparison rather than steer you to one answer.
