Evaporative cooling, done properly

Evaporative cooling is the most common form of whole-home cooling across the Macedon Ranges. It moves a large volume of fresh, water-cooled air through the house, costs a fraction of refrigerated cooling to run, and suits our dry summer heat. It also relies on water, pads, a pump and a fan working together on a roof, which is why a unit that has not been looked at for a few summers tends to fail on the first hot day.

Macedon Ranges Gas & Air services, repairs, replaces and installs evaporative coolers for homes from Sunbury and Gisborne up through Macedon, Woodend, Kyneton and out to Romsey and Lancefield. The technicians who quote the work are the technicians who do it. We do not send subcontractors.

What we do

Service. A proper pre-summer service: pads inspected and cleaned or replaced, pump, float and drain valve checked, water distribution checked, fan and motor tested, controls tested, unit drained and flushed, and a written report of anything that will need attention. Repairs. Not cooling, not starting, leaking water, tripping the power, showing a fault on the controller or making a noise it did not make last year. We diagnose on the first visit and carry the common parts for Brivis, Braemar and Bonaire units. Book a repair.

Replacement and changeover. When a cooler is past economical repair, or the cabinet has cracked, or the control board is no longer available, we replace it with a new unit sized for your home, connected to your existing ductwork where that ductwork is sound, and back the installation with our 9 year labour and workmanship warranty. New installations. For homes without evaporative cooling we design the unit size, duct layout and outlet positions for the floor plan, the number of storeys and the way the house is used, then install and commission it as one job. Request an installation quote.

The brands we work on

Most evaporative coolers in the Ranges are Brivis, Braemar or Bonaire, with older Coolair and Breezair units still going in some homes. We service and repair all of them. For new systems Brivis is our preferred brand: we are factory-trained dealers for Brivis and purchase equipment directly from the manufacturer, and we install other brands where they suit the home. That matters at changeover time, because matching the new unit to the existing duct system and roof penetration is where a lot of installations go wrong.

Single storey, double storey, and why we ask

An evaporative cooler is sized on the volume of air it needs to move, not just floor area. Double storey homes need more capacity, and the duct layout has to deliver cool air to the upper floor without starving the ground floor. That is why our enquiry form asks whether your home is single or double storey before we quote. It is not a formality; it changes the unit we recommend.

Evaporative or reverse cycle?

Plenty of Ranges homes now run evaporative cooling alongside gas ducted heating, and plenty are weighing up a switch to ducted reverse cycle, particularly with the Victorian Energy Upgrades program. We do both, so we will tell you honestly which suits your house, your budget and how you live in it. Not a hose and a quick look. The cabinet comes apart, the tank and pad frames get a foaming clean, the inside is cleaned by hand, everything is rinsed through and the cooler is run with water flowing before we leave. This footage is from one of our own Sunbury services.

How it works

Hot air in, cool air down, windows open

A pump keeps the pads wet, a fan pulls hot outside air through them, the water evaporates and the air comes out cooler. It is pushed down the ducts and out through open windows, taking the heat with it. Dry heat is where it does its best work, which is most of a Ranges summer; a very humid day is its limit, and we show you how to run it on both.

When a cooler is past repairing, or a new home needs one, we fit Brivis: the low-profile Contour that sits discreetly on the roofline, or the traditional Advance cabinet in a range of capacities and colours. The unit is sized for the floor area and ceiling heights, and the ducting and outlets are designed so every room gets its share of air.

Controls

One controller for the cooler, and for a Brivis heater too

A modern Brivis cooler runs from the Brivis Touch wall controller, with comfort level, fan speed, timers and zones on one screen and the same controls on your phone through the Brivis app. If the home also has a Brivis gas ducted heater, one controller runs both.

Questions we get asked

Does evaporative cooling work in the Macedon Ranges?

Yes, and it suits the Ranges well. Evaporative cooling works best in dry heat, and most of our hot days are dry northerlies rather than humid air. On the handful of muggy days each summer it is less effective, which is worth knowing before you choose between evaporative and refrigerated cooling.

How often should an evaporative cooler be serviced?

Once a year, ideally in spring before the first hot week. A pre-summer service catches dry pads, tired pumps and blocked water lines before they turn into a breakdown on a 38 degree day.

Do you work on all evaporative brands?

We service and repair all major evaporative brands including Brivis, Braemar, Bonaire, Coolair and Breezair. For new systems Brivis is our preferred brand, and we install other brands where they suit the home.

What happens if I replace my gas heating with reverse cycle?

If you move to ducted reverse cycle under a VEU upgrade the evaporative cooler is often removed, because the new system heats and cools through its own ductwork. We explain the options on the gas to electric page and during the site visit.
