Evaporative cooling

Brivis Contour and Advance evaporative coolers

For most changeovers and new installations we fit a Brivis Contour or Brivis Advance. Both are ducted evaporative coolers that sit on the roof, draw hot outside air through wet pads and push cool, fresh air through the house with the windows open. They suit the Ranges climate well: dry summer heat is exactly where evaporative cooling does its best work.

The Contour is the low-profile cabinet in the photograph, made to sit discreetly on a roofline. The Advance is the traditional cabinet in a range of capacities and colours. We size the unit for the floor area and ceiling heights of the home, then design the ducting and outlets so every room gets its share of air.

How it works

Hot air in, cool air down, windows open

A pump keeps the cooling pads wet. A fan draws outside air through them, the water evaporates and the air leaves cooler and slightly more humid. That air is pushed down the ducts to the rooms and out through open windows and doors, taking the heat with it.

Because it is fresh air moving through the house rather than the same air being recirculated, the home feels different from a refrigerated system: cooler, moving, and never stuffy. The trade-off is that a very humid day limits how far the air can be cooled, which is why we explain how to run it before we leave.

Inside the cooler

What a Brivis service actually involves

Inside the cabinet are the fan, the pump, the water distribution and four pads. Dust, pollen and mineral build-up settle into all of them over a summer, and a cooler that is not cleaned and checked before the season is the one that fails in the first heatwave.

Our service opens the unit, cleans the tank and pad frames with a foaming solution, cleans the inside by hand, rinses everything through, checks the pump, float, fan and water system, and runs the cooler with water flowing before we leave. The footage here is from one of our own Sunbury services.

Gas ducted heating

Warm floors, quiet rooms, the whole house at once

Gas ducted heating is the heating most Ranges homes were built with, and for good reason: it heats the whole house quickly through floor or ceiling outlets and holds it there on a frosty morning without fuss. Where gas remains the right answer for the home, Brivis is the heater we recommend.

If your existing heater is a Brivis, we service and repair it whatever its age. If it is time to replace it, a new Brivis StarPro can usually use the existing ducts where we have inspected them and they are suitable, which keeps the job to a day.

  • Whole-house warmth through floor or ceiling outlets
  • Existing ducts reused where they pass our inspection
  • Repair first where it makes sense

The heater

Brivis StarPro: the 6 star heater we install, and what we service inside it

The StarPro is Brivis's six-star gas ducted heater, available as an external unit that sits against the side of the house or an internal unit for the roof space. It is the heater we fit on most replacements because it is efficient, well supported with parts, and we know it inside and out. The choice between external and internal comes down to roof space access, where the old heater was, flue routing and where the ducts run, and we put the recommendation in writing after seeing the house.

Inside the cabinet are the burner, the heat exchanger, the fan and the controls. A service checks ignition, gas pressure, the flame, the fan, the filters and the safety devices, inspects the heat exchanger and tests for carbon monoxide. Repairs are mostly ignition, gas valve, fan motor, control board and sensor faults; our technicians carry the common Brivis parts and aim to fix the fault on the day.

Controls and zoning

One controller for heating and cooling, on the wall and on your phone

The Brivis Touch controller runs both a Brivis gas ducted heater and a Brivis evaporative cooler from one screen: heating in winter, cooling in summer, timers and zones in between. The Brivis app puts the same controls on your phone.

With zoning, the heater warms the rooms you are using rather than the whole house, which is the single biggest way to cut a gas bill without giving up comfort. We set the zones and the schedules up with you at handover and show you how to use them.

Installation

The ductwork and the roof space decide the result

Whether it is a heater or a cooler, the equipment is only half the job. Ductwork that is sized for the airflow, insulated, sealed and supported, outlets placed for even comfort, and a commissioning check at every outlet are what separate a system that performs from one that just runs.

On a like-for-like heater replacement the existing ducts can stay where we have inspected them and they are suitable. On a new evaporative installation the ducting, roof penetration, water supply and drain are all ours to get right. Either way it is our own in-house team on the roof and in the roof space.

Our relationship with Brivis

Factory-trained Brivis dealers who buy direct

We are factory-trained dealers for Brivis and purchase equipment directly from the manufacturer. That is not a badge on a van. It means dedicated account management, direct technical support, ongoing product training and warranty support from Brivis itself.

For you it means one phone number. If anything ever needs attention on a Brivis system we installed, you come back to us and we work with the manufacturer on your behalf. You are never left between a retailer and a helpline.

Brivis is part of the Rinnai group, so the same relationship covers Rinnai equipment and the two share controllers, parts supply and technical support.

  • Factory-trained on the current Brivis range
  • Equipment purchased directly from Brivis
  • Dedicated account management and technical support
  • Warranty support handled through us

Dealer relationship confirmed by Macedon Ranges Gas & Air. We also install, service and repair all major heating and cooling brands.

Two warranties, clearly separated

What Brivis covers, and what we cover

The equipment carries the manufacturer's warranty. The installation carries ours. They are different things, and your quote and paperwork name both.

Brivis 9 year warranty badge: 5 year standard plus 4 year extended, conditions apply

Brivis manufacturer warranty

Five years parts and labour, extendable to nine

Brivis backs eligible ducted gas heaters and evaporative coolers with a five-year parts and labour manufacturer warranty. Under the Brivis Service Advantage program that can extend to a total of nine years when the product is registered with Brivis within twelve months of purchase and the scheduled Brivis services are completed. Conditions and exclusions apply and are set by Brivis.

  • Five-year parts and labour warranty on eligible Brivis heaters and coolers
  • Up to nine years in total under Brivis Service Advantage, subject to registration and scheduled servicing
  • Some models are excluded (the Compact Classic CC3 range, for example); the current terms are confirmed on your quote

Macedon Ranges Gas & Air

9 Year Labour & Workmanship Warranty

It applies to the installation work our own team does. Equipment is covered by the manufacturer's warranty, repairs and servicing carry their own workmanship warranty, and pre-existing or reused components are not covered by the nine years.

  • Covers the installation workmanship of our own in-house team
  • Separate from, and in addition to, the Brivis equipment warranty
  • Backed by a local team that is still here in year nine

Why our installations perform

What a Brivis installation by us includes

What a properly designed and installed system includes, and what our quote is built around.

  • Sized for your home, not a rule of thumb

We size heating and cooling from the home: floor area, ceiling heights, insulation, glazing, orientation and how the rooms are used. An oversized unit short-cycles and an undersized one runs flat out on the coldest and hottest days, which is exactly when you need it.

  • New, correctly insulated ductwork on every ducted reverse cycle installation

Ducted systems live or die by the ducts. A new ducted reverse cycle installation gets new ductwork, sized for the system's airflow, insulated to the current standard, sealed at every joint and supported so it does not sag or kink in the roof. We do not reuse old gas-heating ductwork for a new ducted reverse cycle system. When a gas ducted heater is replaced like for like, the existing ducts can stay where we have inspected them and they are suitable.

  • Return air and outlets placed for even comfort

Outlet positions, return-air size and location decide whether the back bedrooms are as comfortable as the living room. We design outlet placement and return air for the floor plan and confirm it with you before installation day.

  • Zoning and sensors where they help

Zoning lets you heat or cool the rooms you are using. Where a system is zoned we set the zones around how the home is lived in, and place temperature sensors where they read the room rather than a hallway or a draught.

Questions we get asked

Do you install new Brivis systems?

Yes. Brivis is our preferred brand for evaporative coolers and, with Rinnai, for gas ducted heaters. We are factory-trained dealers for Brivis and purchase equipment directly from the manufacturer. We can install other brands where they suit the home.

Do you repair older Brivis coolers and heaters?

Yes, wherever parts are still available. Our technicians carry common Brivis parts and know the older ranges well.

Where can I find Brivis error codes?

Our Brivis and Rinnai error code guide explains the common heater codes, what you can safely check yourself and when to book a repair.
