Gas Ducted Heater Replacement in Sunbury: Your Three Real Options

When a Sunbury gas heater is finished there are three genuine options, and the right one depends on the house, the ductwork and whether you also want cooling. We install all three, we are based in Sunbury, and we will tell you plainly which suits your home.

  • New Brivis or Rinnai gas heaters from factory-trained dealers who buy direct
  • Braemar Dominator direct replacement where the existing system suits it
  • Whole-home gas to electric conversion under the VEU program
  • Ductwork inspected in the roof and reused only where it is genuinely suitable

When a Sunbury gas heater is finished

Sunbury gas ducted heaters do a full winter every year and most give fifteen to twenty years. The usual end comes when the heat exchanger cracks, when the heater needs a fan motor and a control board in the same winter, or when it becomes the thing you cannot rely on in July. At that point the decision is not just “which heater” but “which kind of system”, and because Sunbury homes so often have the heater outside or under the floor, and because Sunbury summers make cooling worth having, the answer is less obvious here than it once was.

We install gas heaters, the Braemar Dominator and full ducted reverse cycle systems, so the advice you get is about your house rather than about what we happen to sell.

Option one: a new gas ducted heater

A new Brivis or Rinnai gas ducted heater, matched to the home’s heat load and connected to the existing flue, gas supply and ductwork where they are suitable. This is the quickest and usually the least expensive path. For a Sunbury home with sound ductwork, a good gas connection and a separate evaporative cooler that still has years in it, it is often the right one.

We size the new heater on the house, not on the badge of the old one. Heaters were often oversized in the past, and a correctly sized modern unit runs longer, quieter cycles and heats more evenly. We are factory-trained dealers for both Brivis and Rinnai and buy direct from the manufacturers.

Option two: Braemar Dominator direct replacement

The Braemar Dominator is designed by Braemar as a direct replacement for a gas ducted heater mounted outside the house or under the floor: an electric reverse cycle unit that goes in the position the gas heater came out of and connects to the existing ductwork and outlets where they are suitable. It heats and cools through the same vents, so a Sunbury home gets refrigerated cooling for the humid days evaporative cooling struggles with, without holes in the ceilings.

To be upfront about what is involved: the return air is upsized, a new return air duct and a new supply duct are run, and the first fitting is replaced. That work is part of the quote. Whether your particular ductwork meets the manufacturer’s conditions is something we confirm in the roof at the site visit, not something we assume.

Option three: whole-home gas to electric conversion

Replacing the gas heater with a ducted reverse cycle system that heats and cools the whole house, usually with support from the Victorian Energy Upgrades program. In our experience a proper conversion commonly involves removing the gas heater, often removing the evaporative cooler, and installing a new ducted system with new ductwork and outlets, because the ducts that served a gas heater are frequently too small or too poorly insulated for reverse cycle airflow. It is the biggest of the three jobs and the one that transforms the house most. The Sunbury gas to electric page goes through it in detail.

How we help you choose

The site visit is where this gets decided. We inspect the heater, flue and gas supply, get into the roof space to look at the ductwork, return air and outlets, ask how the house is used and which rooms matter, and check whether the household is likely to be eligible under the VEU program. Then we put the realistic options in writing with what each includes, so you can compare them properly. If only one option makes sense for your home, we say so.

The warranty

Our 9 Year Labour & Workmanship Warranty covers the installation work on every replacement we do. The heater or reverse cycle unit carries the manufacturer’s product warranty, which we manage for you. Existing ductwork and components that are reused are not covered by our warranty, which is why we only reuse what we have inspected and are prepared to stand behind.

Local knowledge

What we see in Sunbury

A large stock of homes built with gas ducted heating

Sunbury grew quickly through the 1990s and 2000s and most of those homes were built with a gas ducted heater and an evaporative cooler. Many are now at the age where the heater needs a heat exchanger, a fan and a board within a couple of winters, which is when replacement becomes the better money.

Heaters outside or under the floor

A lot of Sunbury heaters sit outside the house or under the floor rather than in the roof. That matters because it is exactly the configuration the Braemar Dominator was designed for, so Sunbury homes are more often candidates for a direct replacement than the older weatherboards further up the Ranges.

Cooling is half the decision here

Sunbury summers are hotter than the Ranges towns, so a household replacing a heater is often also thinking about cooling. That tips some homes towards reverse cycle, either a Dominator using the existing outlets or a full ducted conversion, rather than another gas-only heater.

Tight roof spaces in the newer estates

Roof spaces in newer Sunbury homes can be tight, which affects whether new ductwork is practical and where a replacement heater can go. We look before we quote, rather than promising new ducts that will not fit.

Our home base

We are based in Sunbury, so the site visit is quick to arrange and the installation day does not start with an hour on the Calder. Diggers Rest, Bulla, Toolern Vale and Clarkefield are covered from the same depot.

Why our installations perform

The MRGA Standard

What a properly designed and installed system includes, and what our quote is built around.

  • Sized for your home, not a rule of thumb

We size heating and cooling from the home: floor area, ceiling heights, insulation, glazing, orientation and how the rooms are used. An oversized unit short-cycles and an undersized one runs flat out on the coldest and hottest days, which is exactly when you need it.

  • New, correctly insulated ductwork on every ducted reverse cycle installation

Ducted systems live or die by the ducts. A new ducted reverse cycle installation gets new ductwork, sized for the system's airflow, insulated to the current standard, sealed at every joint and supported so it does not sag or kink in the roof. We do not reuse old gas-heating ductwork for a new ducted reverse cycle system. When a gas ducted heater is replaced like for like, the existing ducts can stay where we have inspected them and they are suitable.

  • Return air and outlets placed for even comfort

Outlet positions, return-air size and location decide whether the back bedrooms are as comfortable as the living room. We design outlet placement and return air for the floor plan and confirm it with you before installation day.

  • Zoning and sensors where they help

Zoning lets you heat or cool the rooms you are using. Where a system is zoned we set the zones around how the home is lived in, and place temperature sensors where they read the room rather than a hallway or a draught.

Factory-trained dealers

Trained by the manufacturers, buying direct

We are factory-trained dealers for ActronAir, Brivis and Rinnai and purchase equipment directly from these manufacturers.

We also install, service and repair all major heating and cooling brands.

Accountability

9Year Labour & Workmanship Warranty

It applies to the installation work our own team does. Equipment is covered by the manufacturer's warranty, repairs and servicing carry their own workmanship warranty, and pre-existing or reused components are not covered by the nine years.

Gas Ducted Heater Replacement in Sunbury: your questions

Is my Sunbury gas heater worth replacing, or can it be repaired?

If the heat exchanger has failed, replacement is the answer; a cracked heat exchanger is a safety issue, not a repair. If the heater is more than fifteen years old and needs major parts, replacement usually wins on cost over the next few winters. If it is younger and needs a fan motor or a control board, a repair is the better money, and we will say so.

Which option is cheapest?

A like-for-like gas heater is usually the least expensive upfront, followed by the Braemar Dominator where the house suits it, then a full ducted reverse cycle conversion, which is a bigger job with new ductwork. Running costs and what you get for the money differ, which is why we put all the realistic options in one written comparison rather than quoting one and hoping.

Does the Dominator suit my Sunbury home?

It is designed for gas ducted heaters mounted outside the house or under the floor, with ductwork and outlets in sound condition. Many Sunbury homes match that. If your heater is in the roof space, or the ducts are undersized or damaged, we would normally recommend a conventional ducted reverse cycle system instead and we tell you at the site visit.

Can the new heater use my existing ducts?

For a like-for-like gas heater, often yes, provided the ducts are intact, insulated and sized correctly. For a change to reverse cycle, the existing gas ductwork is frequently unsuitable because the air volume and temperature are different. We inspect before we quote and tell you either way.

How long does a replacement take?

A like-for-like gas heater changeover is usually a day. A Dominator installation is usually a day. A whole-home conversion to ducted reverse cycle with new ductwork is typically one to two days on site.
