Evaporative Cooler Replacement and Changeovers in Sunbury

Sunbury is our home town, and a lot of the coolers that went onto roofs when the estates were built are now at the end of their run. We tell you honestly whether yours is worth repairing, and if it is not, we replace it with a unit sized for your home and connected to ductwork we have actually inspected.

  • New Brivis coolers, bought direct from the manufacturer and installed by our own Sunbury-based team
  • Single and double storey homes sized properly, not quoted off the roof
  • Existing ductwork reused only where we have checked it in the roof space
  • 9 year labour and workmanship warranty on the changeover

Replacing a cooler in Sunbury: what is different here

Most of the changeovers we do in Sunbury follow the same pattern. A home built with a gas ducted heater and an evaporative cooler, the cooler somewhere between fifteen and twenty-five summers old, and a household that has either had one repair too many or has come home to a unit that will not start on the first hot day. The question is rarely “which brand”; it is whether to replace like for like, upsize, or change the whole approach to heating and cooling at the same time.

Because Sunbury is warmer than the Ranges towns, coolers here do more running hours per summer. That is good news for evaporative cooling as a technology, because it is at its best on hot, dry days, but it does mean the pump, float, pads and water system wear sooner. It also means an undersized cooler is more obvious here than anywhere else we work: it simply runs flat out on a 38 degree afternoon and the back of the house never cools.

Repair or replace: how we decide

We would rather repair a cooler that is worth repairing, and a service or repair visit sorts out pumps, floats, pads, motors and controllers on units that are otherwise sound. Replacement becomes the sensible answer when:

  • the cabinet or water tank is cracked, brittle or leaking, which cannot be repaired reliably;
  • the control board or motor has failed on a model the manufacturer no longer supports;
  • the unit needs several major parts in the same visit, adding up to a large share of a new cooler;
  • the cooler was undersized for the home, or a second storey or extension was added after it went in;
  • you want lower water use, quieter operation and a modern controller.

We explain the comparison at the site visit with real numbers, not a sales pitch.

What a Sunbury changeover involves

  1. A site visit to measure the home, confirm single or double storey, check the roof, and get into the roof space to inspect the dropper, duct runs and outlets.
  2. A written quote naming the unit and capacity we recommend, what is being reused, what is new and why.
  3. On the day, the old cooler, water supply and controller are isolated and removed, and the old unit is taken away.
  4. The roof penetration is checked and the new unit fitted with new flashing so the roof is weatherproof.
  5. Water and drain connected, new controller fitted, electrical circuit tested.
  6. Commissioning: the unit run through every mode, airflow checked at every outlet, and the controls explained before we leave.

Our preferred replacement is a new Brivis cooler. We are factory-trained Brivis dealers who buy direct from the manufacturer, which matters for pricing and for warranty support later. Where another brand suits the home better, we say so.

If the heater is on its way out too

A lot of Sunbury households find the gas ducted heater and the evaporative cooler ageing in the same few years. If that is you, it is worth looking at a whole-home gas to electric conversion or a straight gas heater replacement before committing to a new cooler, because the answer changes what goes on the roof. Some households prefer to keep evaporative cooling for its low running cost on dry days and replace the heater on its own. We do all of these and will not push you either way.

The warranty

Every changeover we complete is backed by our 9 Year Labour & Workmanship Warranty on the installation work. The cooler itself carries the manufacturer’s product warranty, which we handle for you. Existing ductwork and components we reuse are not covered by our warranty, which is one more reason we inspect them properly before we decide to keep them.

Local knowledge

What we see in Sunbury

The estates are reaching cooler end-of-life together

Many Sunbury homes were built with a gas ducted heater and an evaporative cooler on the roof, and across the estates built from the 1990s onward those original coolers are now fifteen to twenty-five summers old. Brittle cabinets, weeping tanks and obsolete control boards are what we find most often, and they are the faults that make a changeover better value than another repair.

Double storey homes change the sizing

Sunbury has a high proportion of double storey homes. An evaporative cooler is sized on air volume, so a unit that suited a single storey home never keeps up across two floors. We ask about storeys before we quote and we size the replacement for the whole house, with the outlet layout checked so the upstairs bedrooms get their share.

Tight roof spaces in the newer estates

Roof spaces in newer Sunbury homes can be tight, which affects the dropper, the duct runs and where a replacement unit can sit. We get into the roof at the site visit rather than assuming the new cooler can go exactly where the old one was.

Sunbury summers work coolers hard

Sunbury sits lower and warmer than the Ranges proper, with more hot, dry days than Woodend or Kyneton. Evaporative cooling suits that climate well, but the units here clock up more running hours, so the pump, pads and water system wear sooner than they do further up the hill.

Our home base

We are based in Sunbury, so changeovers here are often the first job of the day and there is no travel built into the price. Sunbury, Diggers Rest, Bulla, Toolern Vale and Clarkefield are all covered from the depot.

Why our installations perform

The MRGA Standard

What a properly designed and installed system includes, and what our quote is built around.

  • Sized for your home, not a rule of thumb

    We size heating and cooling from the home: floor area, ceiling heights, insulation, glazing, orientation and how the rooms are used. An oversized unit short-cycles and an undersized one runs flat out on the coldest and hottest days, which is exactly when you need it.

  • New, correctly insulated ductwork on every ducted reverse cycle installation

    Ducted systems live or die by the ducts. A new ducted reverse cycle installation gets new ductwork, sized for the system's airflow, insulated to the current standard, sealed at every joint and supported so it does not sag or kink in the roof. We do not reuse old gas-heating ductwork for a new ducted reverse cycle system. When a gas ducted heater is replaced like for like, the existing ducts can stay where we have inspected them and they are suitable.

  • Return air and outlets placed for even comfort

    Outlet positions, return-air size and location decide whether the back bedrooms are as comfortable as the living room. We design outlet placement and return air for the floor plan and confirm it with you before installation day.

  • Water and drain done properly on evaporative coolers

    A watertight roof penetration, a properly connected water supply with an accessible isolation point, a drain that actually drains, and pads and distribution set up so the unit cools evenly from day one.

Factory-trained dealers

Trained by the manufacturers, buying direct

We are factory-trained dealers for ActronAir, Brivis and Rinnai and purchase equipment directly from these manufacturers.

We also install, service and repair all major heating and cooling brands.

Accountability

9Year Labour & Workmanship Warranty

It applies to the installation work our own team does. Equipment is covered by the manufacturer's warranty, repairs and servicing carry their own workmanship warranty, and pre-existing or reused components are not covered by the nine years.

Evaporative Cooler Replacement in Sunbury: your questions

How do I know whether my Sunbury cooler needs replacing or just a service?

If it has been sitting since last summer and smells or cools poorly, book a service first; most of those units come good with a clean, new pads or a pump. Replacement is the answer when the cabinet is cracked or brittle, the tank leaks, the control board is no longer supported or the unit needs several major parts at once. We tell you which it is at the first visit and we do not charge you a changeover quote for a cooler that only needs a pump.

Can the new cooler use the existing ducts in my Sunbury home?

Often, yes. Evaporative ductwork is large and, when it is intact, well supported and the outlets are in sensible places, we connect the new unit to it. In tighter roof spaces we sometimes find crushed or kinked runs, and in some older estates the duct is undersized for a properly sized replacement. We show you what we found and quote the fix rather than connecting a new cooler to ducts that will hold it back.

How long does a changeover take in Sunbury?

Most like-for-like changeovers are done in a day, and because we are based in Sunbury they are usually scheduled as the first job so the cooler is running by the afternoon. A changeover that includes new ductwork or a different roof position can take longer, which we tell you before the day.

Should I replace the cooler, or go to ducted reverse cycle instead?

If your gas ducted heater is also near the end, it is worth reading about a whole-home gas to electric conversion under the VEU program before you commit to a like-for-like cooler. In a full conversion the evaporative cooler can stay or be removed; the new system cools through its own ductwork, so it comes down to the cooler's condition and what you want. If the heater has years left, a new cooler is the sensible spend. We install both and will give you a straight comparison for your home.

What about the old cooler?

We remove it, take it away and make good the roof with new flashing. Nothing is left on the roof or in your driveway.
