The finished cooler is run with water flowing over the pads and checked before we leave.

More than an inspection

A proper evaporative service, not just a quick check

A lot of "services" are a look, a hose over the pads and a tick on a form. Ours is a physical clean of the cooler followed by the checks that decide whether it will actually cool your house in January.

A deep foaming clean, not a hose-down

Most services stop at spraying the pads. We apply a foaming cleaning solution to the pads and the relevant internal areas of the cooler, work it through, and rinse it out. That is what lifts the dirt and debris that a quick rinse leaves behind.

The water system is checked, not glanced at

Pump, float valve, drain valve, solenoid, water lines and bleed rate. These are the parts that fail in January, and they are checked and adjusted while the unit is open.

Airflow and operation are tested

Fan modes and speeds, accessible ducting, airflow at the outlets and water distribution across every pad, finished with a full function test so the cooler leaves our hands running the way it should.

Filtrex treatment included

A Filtrex cleaning treatment is applied as part of the service process once the pads and tank are clean.

Plain answers

Why an evaporative cooler needs a proper service

Dirt and debris build up over a year

A cooler sits on the roof through autumn and winter collecting dust, leaves and grit in the pads, the tank and the frame. That build-up blocks airflow and stops the pads wetting evenly, which is why a cooler that ran well last summer can feel weak this year.

Pads have a working life

Cooling pads wear, clog with minerals and go hard. We check their condition properly and tell you honestly whether they will do another summer or whether a new set is the better money.

The water system is where most faults start

Pumps that stop lifting water, float valves that stick, drain valves that leak and bleed rates that were never set. Each one shows up as a cooler that runs but does not cool, or a roof that stays wet.

Airflow is the whole point

Fan speeds, ducting condition and outlet airflow decide how much cool air reaches the rooms. We test it rather than assume it.

Smells at start-up

A musty smell on the first hot day is usually stale water and a build-up on the pads after months of sitting. A proper clean of the tank and pads deals with the cause rather than masking it.

Ready before the heat, not during it

The first hot week is when every cooler in the district gets switched on and the breakdown calls start. A spring service picks up the obvious problems while there is still time to fix them without a wait.

Local knowledge

Evaporative cooling in Macedon and Mount Macedon

Macedon is the town our name comes from, and the coolers here have their own character. They live under trees, they sit through long frosty winters, and on the mountain they do fewer summer hours than a cooler on the plains. That combination produces a particular set of faults, and it also means a cooler can be neglected for years without complaint right up until the first genuinely hot afternoon, when it is needed and does not work. Our technicians are our own employees, factory trained on Brivis and experienced with Braemar, Bonaire, Coolair and Breezair, and Macedon is one of our most regular runs.

The spring service, Macedon version

The checklist on a service is the same everywhere: clean the tank, inspect and clean or quote the pads, test the pump and the float and dump valves, check the water distribution, test the fan and motor, check the controller, run the unit in every mode and measure the airflow at the outlets. What we spend more time on in Macedon and Mount Macedon is the leaf litter. Pad frames and tanks full of bark and seed block the water and the airflow, and a dump valve that is not emptying the unit between uses leaves stale water in the tank through the frosts. Both get proper attention rather than a hose-over. The price is agreed before we start, parts such as a pad set are quoted before they are fitted, and the website booking price on the main evaporative service page applies when you book through the site.

Repairs

Tell us the symptom when you book and the technician arrives with the likely parts. The Macedon repairs we do most are overflows from leaf-blocked tanks and perished floats, pumps that have stopped lifting water, dump valves that stick and controllers that will not respond. Water through a ceiling is treated as urgent. Our guide on a cooler that runs but does not cool covers the checks you can make yourself before calling.

Replacement on the mountain

We fix coolers that are worth fixing. When the cabinet has gone brittle, the tank leaks or the control board is no longer supported, a changeover is the better money and we say so. A replacement for a large, high-ceilinged Macedon home is sized on the air volume of the house, not the nameplate of the old unit, and on the mountain we also look hard at whether evaporative cooling is still the right system for a heavily shaded, mild site or whether the household would be better served by refrigerated cooling. Our guide on repairing or replacing a cooler sets out the reasoning and the main replacement page describes the changeover.

When the heating is also due

Many Macedon homes have a gas ducted heater of the same age as the cooler. If both are near the end, the Macedon VEU gas to electric page explains a cold-climate ducted reverse cycle conversion that heats and cools, and settles the cooler question at the same time.

Coolers under the trees

Macedon and Mount Macedon homes sit among established trees, and a cooler on a roof under gums and exotics collects leaves, bark, seed and dust in the pad frames and tank all year. A tank blocked with leaves is the most common reason a Macedon cooler overflows or stops lifting water in its first hot week, and it is the first thing we clear on a service.

Shaded, cool sites

Mount Macedon's summers are milder than the plains and many homes are heavily shaded, so a cooler here does fewer hours than one in Sunbury. That is easier on the pump and pads but it means a unit can go several summers between services without anyone noticing the pads have set hard or the float has perished. When it is finally needed on a hot day, it fails. A service every spring, or every second spring on a lightly used mountain cooler, avoids that.

Frost and altitude

At around 500 metres in Macedon and higher on the mountain the frosts are hard and long. Rubber floats, seals and water lines perish faster, and any water left in the tank over winter does the cabinet no favours. Making sure the dump valve actually empties the unit between uses is part of every Macedon service for that reason.

Larger, older homes

Many Macedon and Mount Macedon houses are large, with high ceilings and big living areas. A cooler that never quite keeps up on one of these homes is often undersized for the air volume rather than faulty, and we say so instead of charging for repeat visits. A correctly sized replacement, or a different type of system, is the honest answer in that case.

Evaporative cooling in Macedon and Mount Macedon: your questions

What does a Macedon evaporative cooling service include?

The tank is drained and cleaned, leaves and debris are cleared from the pad frames, the pads are inspected and cleaned or quoted for replacement, the pump and the float and dump valves are tested, water distribution across every pad is checked, the fan and motor are tested under load, the controller and connections are checked and the unit is run through every mode with the airflow checked at the outlets. You get a written note of anything that will need attention. The website booking price on the main evaporative service page applies when you book online.

Do you cover Mount Macedon as well as Macedon?

Yes, at the same price. Steep, treed blocks on the mountain sometimes need a second look at roof access before the visit, so tell us what the site is like when you book.

My cooler overflows and drips down the wall. What is it?

On a Macedon roof the usual cause is a tank or drain blocked with leaves and bark, followed by a float valve that has perished over winter and no longer shuts off. Both are fixed on the visit. If water is coming through a ceiling, turn the cooler's water supply off if you can reach it and call us.

Is it worth repairing an old cooler on a shaded site?

Often yes, because a lightly used mountain cooler can be in good condition for its age. A pump, pad set or motor is good money on a sound cabinet. Where the cabinet has gone brittle, the tank leaks or the control board is obsolete, we tell you a changeover is the better spend.

Should I keep the cooler if I convert the heating to electric?

It depends on the cooler's condition and how you cool the house. A ducted reverse cycle system installed under the VEU program cools as well as heats through its own ducts, so many households remove an old cooler in the same job, while others keep a sound cooler for cheap dry-day cooling. We look at both at the site visit; the Macedon VEU page explains the conversion.
