More than an inspection
A proper evaporative service, not just a quick check
A lot of "services" are a look, a hose over the pads and a tick on a form. Ours is a physical clean of the cooler followed by the checks that decide whether it will actually cool your house in January.
A deep foaming clean, not a hose-down
Most services stop at spraying the pads. We apply a foaming cleaning solution to the pads and the relevant internal areas of the cooler, work it through, and rinse it out. That is what lifts the dirt and debris that a quick rinse leaves behind.
The water system is checked, not glanced at
Pump, float valve, drain valve, solenoid, water lines and bleed rate. These are the parts that fail in January, and they are checked and adjusted while the unit is open.
Airflow and operation are tested
Fan modes and speeds, accessible ducting, airflow at the outlets and water distribution across every pad, finished with a full function test so the cooler leaves our hands running the way it should.
Filtrex treatment included
A Filtrex cleaning treatment is applied as part of the service process once the pads and tank are clean.

Plain answers
Why an evaporative cooler needs a proper service
Dirt and debris build up over a year
A cooler sits on the roof through autumn and winter collecting dust, leaves and grit in the pads, the tank and the frame. That build-up blocks airflow and stops the pads wetting evenly, which is why a cooler that ran well last summer can feel weak this year.
Pads have a working life
Cooling pads wear, clog with minerals and go hard. We check their condition properly and tell you honestly whether they will do another summer or whether a new set is the better money.
The water system is where most faults start
Pumps that stop lifting water, float valves that stick, drain valves that leak and bleed rates that were never set. Each one shows up as a cooler that runs but does not cool, or a roof that stays wet.
Airflow is the whole point
Fan speeds, ducting condition and outlet airflow decide how much cool air reaches the rooms. We test it rather than assume it.
Smells at start-up
A musty smell on the first hot day is usually stale water and a build-up on the pads after months of sitting. A proper clean of the tank and pads deals with the cause rather than masking it.
Ready before the heat, not during it
The first hot week is when every cooler in the district gets switched on and the breakdown calls start. A spring service picks up the obvious problems while there is still time to fix them without a wait.
Local knowledge
Evaporative cooling in Gisborne
Gisborne is one of our busiest towns and evaporative cooling is a large part of the reason. The established streets are full of homes from the 1990s and 2000s that were built with a gas ducted heater and an evaporative cooler, and those coolers are now at an age where a bit of attention each spring is the difference between a unit that cools all summer and one that fails in the first hot week. Our technicians are our own employees, factory trained on Brivis equipment and experienced with Braemar, Bonaire, Coolair and Breezair.
A service before the first hot week
A cooler is a wet appliance that has spent the winter on a roof. The water in the tank has gone stale, the pads have dried hard, minerals have set on the water distributor and the small rubber parts have perished. A spring service resets all of that: tank cleaned, pads cleaned or replaced, pump and float and dump valve tested, water distribution checked across every pad, fan and motor tested, controller checked, and a full run with the airflow measured at the outlets. The price is agreed before we start and any parts, such as a pad set, are quoted before they are fitted. Book through the website and the website booking price applies; the details of the offer are on the main evaporative service page.
Repairs in Gisborne
If the cooler has already stopped, or runs without cooling, tell us the symptom when you book and the technician arrives with the likely parts. The Gisborne repairs we do most are pumps that no longer lift water, floats and dump valves that stick, controllers that will not respond, and overflow from a tank blocked with leaves on the treed blocks towards Gisborne South. Water coming through a ceiling is treated as urgent; turn the cooler’s water supply off if you can reach it and call. Our guide on why a cooler runs but does not cool covers the checks you can do yourself first.
When replacement is the honest answer
We fix coolers that are worth fixing. A pump, a pad set or a motor on a sound unit is good money. A cracked or brittle cabinet, a leaking tank or a control board nobody supports any more is not, and on a large share of the 1990s coolers in Gisborne that is the situation we find. When it is, we say so and quote a changeover: a new cooler sized for the house, which in a high-ceilinged or two storey Gisborne home often means a larger unit than the one coming down, installed by our own team with the existing ductwork reused only after we have checked it in the roof. Our guide on repairing or replacing an evaporative cooler sets out how we make that call, and the main replacement page covers the changeover itself.
If the heater is due at the same time
In many established Gisborne homes the gas heater and the cooler are the same age and both due. That is the moment to look at the gas heater replacement options and the VEU gas to electric conversion alongside the cooler decision, because a ducted reverse cycle system cools as well as heats and changes whether a new cooler is needed at all. We install all of it, so the advice follows the house rather than the product.
A generation of coolers reaching the same age
Gisborne and New Gisborne grew fast through the 1990s and 2000s and a large share of those homes went up with an evaporative cooler on the roof. Twenty to thirty summers later the cabinets, tanks and control boards are all ageing together, so the question we get asked most in Gisborne is not how to service the cooler but whether to. We answer it honestly on the roof, not from a script.
Newer estates, tighter roofs
The newer New Gisborne estates have shallower roof spaces than the established streets, which matters when a cooler is replaced: the dropper, the duct runs and the outlet positions have to work with the roof that is there. We check the roof space before a changeover is quoted, not on the day.
Acreage and trees towards Gisborne South
On the larger blocks towards Gisborne South and Bullengarook, coolers sit under established trees and collect leaves, bark and dust in the pad frames and tank. Those units need the pads and water distribution cleaned properly every spring, and a leaf-blocked tank is the most common reason a Gisborne South cooler overflows in its first hot week.
Dry-heat summers that suit evaporative cooling
Gisborne's summers are warm and mostly dry, which is what an evaporative cooler is built for. A serviced, correctly sized unit cools a whole Gisborne house on a dry 35 degree day for a fraction of the running cost of refrigerated air. On the handful of humid days each summer it will feel less effective, and that is the system, not a fault.
Gisborne and the towns around it. We regularly service Gisborne, New Gisborne, Gisborne South, Riddells Creek and Macedon, so a service is easy to fit in and a breakdown in a heatwave does not sit at the bottom of a long list.

What happens next
Evaporative cooling in Gisborne: your questions
What does a Gisborne evaporative cooling service include?
The tank is drained and cleaned, the pads are inspected and cleaned or quoted for replacement, the pump, float valve and dump valve are tested, water distribution across every pad is checked, the fan and motor are tested under load, the controller and electrical connections are checked and the unit is run through every mode with airflow checked at the outlets. You get a written note of anything that will need attention. Book it through the website and the booking price shown above applies.
My Gisborne cooler is from the 1990s. Should I still service it?
If the cabinet is sound and the tank does not leak, yes: a service and the odd pump or pad set will keep a well-built older cooler running for years. If the cabinet has gone brittle, the tank is cracked or the control board is no longer supported, we will tell you that a service is not good money and talk you through a changeover instead.
Do you replace coolers in Gisborne, or only service them?
Both. Changeovers in Gisborne, New Gisborne and Gisborne South are done by the same in-house team, usually in a day for a like-for-like swap, with the new cooler sized for the house rather than matched to the old nameplate. New Brivis coolers are bought direct from the manufacturer, and we install every major brand.
What is the most common evaporative cooler fault you see in Gisborne?
A pump that has stopped lifting water, closely followed by float and dump valves that stick after a winter unused. Both are quick to diagnose and usually fixed on the first visit from the parts we carry.
Can you service the gas heater at the same time?
Yes. Many Gisborne households book the heater service and safety check with the cooler clean in the one visit, which saves a second call-out.
