  3. Rinse Rinse

    3 Rinse

More than an inspection

A proper evaporative service, not just a quick check

A lot of "services" are a look, a hose over the pads and a tick on a form. Ours is a physical clean of the cooler followed by the checks that decide whether it will actually cool your house in January.

A deep foaming clean, not a hose-down

Most services stop at spraying the pads. We apply a foaming cleaning solution to the pads and the relevant internal areas of the cooler, work it through, and rinse it out. That is what lifts the dirt and debris that a quick rinse leaves behind.

The water system is checked, not glanced at

Pump, float valve, drain valve, solenoid, water lines and bleed rate. These are the parts that fail in January, and they are checked and adjusted while the unit is open.

Airflow and operation are tested

Fan modes and speeds, accessible ducting, airflow at the outlets and water distribution across every pad, finished with a full function test so the cooler leaves our hands running the way it should.

Filtrex treatment included

A Filtrex cleaning treatment is applied as part of the service process once the pads and tank are clean.

Plain answers

Why an evaporative cooler needs a proper service

Dirt and debris build up over a year

A cooler sits on the roof through autumn and winter collecting dust, leaves and grit in the pads, the tank and the frame. That build-up blocks airflow and stops the pads wetting evenly, which is why a cooler that ran well last summer can feel weak this year.

Pads have a working life

Cooling pads wear, clog with minerals and go hard. We check their condition properly and tell you honestly whether they will do another summer or whether a new set is the better money.

The water system is where most faults start

Pumps that stop lifting water, float valves that stick, drain valves that leak and bleed rates that were never set. Each one shows up as a cooler that runs but does not cool, or a roof that stays wet.

Airflow is the whole point

Fan speeds, ducting condition and outlet airflow decide how much cool air reaches the rooms. We test it rather than assume it.

Smells at start-up

A musty smell on the first hot day is usually stale water and a build-up on the pads after months of sitting. A proper clean of the tank and pads deals with the cause rather than masking it.

Ready before the heat, not during it

The first hot week is when every cooler in the district gets switched on and the breakdown calls start. A spring service picks up the obvious problems while there is still time to fix them without a wait.

Local knowledge

Evaporative cooling in Melton

Melton is built for evaporative cooling. The summers are hot and dry, many of the established suburbs went up with a cooler on the roof, and a well maintained unit will cool a Melton house on a 38 degree day for a fraction of the running cost of refrigerated air. The catch is the hours. A cooler here works harder than any we service, and the pads, pump and water system show it: scale on the pads, pumps that have done their life by fifteen summers, tanks full of dust off the paddocks. Our technicians are our own employees, factory trained on Brivis and experienced with Braemar, Bonaire, Coolair and Breezair.

A service every spring

The checklist is the same on every cooler: tank drained and cleaned, pads inspected and cleaned or quoted, pump tested under load, float and dump valves checked so the unit fills and empties properly, water distribution checked across every pad, fan and motor tested, controller checked and a full run in every mode with the airflow measured at the outlets. The pads and the distributor get the most attention here, because that is where the hours and the dust show first. The price is agreed before we start and a pad set is quoted before it is fitted. Booking through the website brings the website booking price; the main evaporative service page has the details of the offer.

Repairs across Melton

If the cooler has stopped, or runs without cooling, tell us the symptom and the technician arrives with the likely parts. The repairs we do most are pumps that no longer lift water, pads that have scaled hard, floats and dump valves that stick, controllers that will not respond and fan motors and capacitors on older units that have simply done their hours. Water coming through a ceiling is urgent; turn the cooler’s water supply off if you can reach it and call. Our guide on a cooler that runs but does not cool covers the checks you can make yourself first.

Replacement

We fix coolers that are worth fixing and say plainly when they are not. In the established Melton suburbs a large share of the coolers we are asked to repair are at the point where the cabinet is brittle, the tank leaks or the control board is obsolete, and a changeover is the better money. A new cooler is sized for the house, on air volume rather than the old nameplate, and installed by our own team, usually in a day for a like-for-like swap. New Brivis coolers are bought direct from the manufacturer. Our guide on repair or replace explains how we decide and the main replacement page covers the changeover.

Melton households changing the heating

Many homes here have a gas ducted heater the same age as the cooler. When both are near the end, the Melton VEU gas to electric page explains the ducted reverse cycle conversion that replaces the heater and cools through its own ducts, and the Melton ducted reverse cycle page covers whole-home refrigerated cooling for households who want it regardless of the heating.

The hardest-working coolers we see

Melton sits on the western plains with long runs of hot, dry days and little shade on the newer estates. An evaporative cooler is the right system for that weather, and it also means the pump, pads and water system do more hours here than anywhere else we work. Pads scale up and wear out faster, pumps run longer, and a cooler that is serviced every second year here is usually running short by the second January.

Established suburbs with ageing coolers

Melton, Melton South, Melton West, Kurunjang and Brookfield have a large stock of homes from the 1980s through the 2000s that were built with a gas ducted heater and an evaporative cooler. Many of those coolers are now well past twenty summers, and the question we answer most here is whether one more repair is good money or whether the cabinet, tank and board have all had their time.

Estate homes and roof access

The newer estate homes in Harkness and around the Melton fringe are often double storey with shallow roof spaces. Roof access takes the right ladders and safety equipment, which our technicians bring as standard, and a changeover on one of these homes is planned around the roof that is there rather than the one the old cooler was built for.

Dust and wind

Melton is windy and dusty, particularly on the estates that still border open paddocks. Dust settles into pad frames and tanks, blocks the water distributor and leaves pads passing warm air. Cleaning the tank and checking the distribution across every pad is the part of the service that pays for itself.

Evaporative cooling in Melton: your questions

What does the evaporative cooling service include?

The tank is drained and cleaned, the pads are inspected and cleaned or quoted for replacement, the pump and the float and dump valves are tested, water distribution across every pad is checked, the fan and motor are tested under load, the controller and electrical connections are checked and the unit is run through every mode with the airflow checked at the outlets. You get a written note of anything that will need attention. The website booking price shown above applies when you book online.

Do you actually come to Melton?

Yes. We regularly service all the Melton suburbs, and the technicians who come are our own employees, not subcontractors.

My cooler works in the morning but the house is hot by late afternoon.

On a 38 degree afternoon that is usually one of three things: pads that are scaled or dry so the air is passing through unwetted, a pump that is only just lifting water, or a unit that is simply too small for the house. The first two are fixed on a service or repair visit. If it is the third we tell you, rather than keep servicing a cooler that cannot do the job.

Is it worth repairing a twenty year old cooler?

For a pump, pad set or motor on a sound cabinet, yes. For a brittle cabinet, a leaking tank or a control board nobody supports any more, no, and on the older coolers here that is often what we find. We tell you which it is before you commit to anything and quote a changeover sized for the house.

Can you replace the cooler and the gas heater together?

Yes, and that is often the smart way to do it. A ducted reverse cycle conversion under the VEU program removes the gas heater and cools through its own ducts, which changes whether a new cooler is needed at all. The Melton VEU page explains it.
