More than an inspection
A proper evaporative service, not just a quick check
A lot of "services" are a look, a hose over the pads and a tick on a form. Ours is a physical clean of the cooler followed by the checks that decide whether it will actually cool your house in January.
A deep foaming clean, not a hose-down
Most services stop at spraying the pads. We apply a foaming cleaning solution to the pads and the relevant internal areas of the cooler, work it through, and rinse it out. That is what lifts the dirt and debris that a quick rinse leaves behind.
The water system is checked, not glanced at
Pump, float valve, drain valve, solenoid, water lines and bleed rate. These are the parts that fail in January, and they are checked and adjusted while the unit is open.
Airflow and operation are tested
Fan modes and speeds, accessible ducting, airflow at the outlets and water distribution across every pad, finished with a full function test so the cooler leaves our hands running the way it should.
Filtrex treatment included
A Filtrex cleaning treatment is applied as part of the service process once the pads and tank are clean.

Plain answers
Why an evaporative cooler needs a proper service
Dirt and debris build up over a year
A cooler sits on the roof through autumn and winter collecting dust, leaves and grit in the pads, the tank and the frame. That build-up blocks airflow and stops the pads wetting evenly, which is why a cooler that ran well last summer can feel weak this year.
Pads have a working life
Cooling pads wear, clog with minerals and go hard. We check their condition properly and tell you honestly whether they will do another summer or whether a new set is the better money.
The water system is where most faults start
Pumps that stop lifting water, float valves that stick, drain valves that leak and bleed rates that were never set. Each one shows up as a cooler that runs but does not cool, or a roof that stays wet.
Airflow is the whole point
Fan speeds, ducting condition and outlet airflow decide how much cool air reaches the rooms. We test it rather than assume it.
Smells at start-up
A musty smell on the first hot day is usually stale water and a build-up on the pads after months of sitting. A proper clean of the tank and pads deals with the cause rather than masking it.
Ready before the heat, not during it
The first hot week is when every cooler in the district gets switched on and the breakdown calls start. A spring service picks up the obvious problems while there is still time to fix them without a wait.
Local knowledge
Evaporative cooling in Diggers Rest
Diggers Rest shares Sunbury’s summers: hot, dry and long enough that an evaporative cooler earns its keep. It is also a town of two halves for our purposes. The older township around the station and the Old Calder Highway has coolers of every age on every kind of roof, and the newer estates that have grown up around it have younger units in tighter roof spaces. Our technicians are our own employees, factory trained on Brivis and experienced with Braemar, Bonaire, Coolair and Breezair, and they are in Diggers Rest most days.
The pre-summer service
A cooler is a wet appliance that has spent the winter on a roof, and by September the water in the tank has gone stale, the pads have dried hard, minerals have set on the distributor and dust from the paddocks has settled in the tank. The service resets it: tank cleaned, pads cleaned or quoted, pump tested under load, float and dump valves checked so the unit fills and empties properly, water distribution checked across every pad, fan and motor tested, controller checked and a full run in every mode with the airflow measured at the outlets. The price is agreed before we start and parts are quoted before they are fitted. Booking through the website brings the website booking price; the main evaporative service page has the offer in full.
Repairs
If the cooler has stopped, or runs without cooling, tell us the symptom when you book and the technician arrives with the likely parts. The Diggers Rest repairs we do most are pumps that have stopped lifting water, floats and dump valves that stick after winter, controllers that will not respond and, on the newer estate homes, ducts crushed under roof insulation so that one end of the house never cools. Water coming through a ceiling is urgent; turn the cooler’s water supply off if you can reach it and call. Our guide on a cooler that runs but does not cool covers what you can check first.
Replacement
We fix coolers that are worth fixing. When the cabinet has gone brittle, the tank leaks or the control board is no longer supported, a changeover is the better money and we say so before you spend anything on repairs. A new cooler is sized for the house, which for a double storey estate home usually means sizing on the air volume rather than copying the old nameplate, and it is installed by our own team, normally in a day for a like-for-like swap. Our guide on repair or replace explains how we make the call and the Sunbury changeover page describes the job in a home much like most Diggers Rest homes.
If the heater is due too
Diggers Rest homes built with a gas heater and a cooler as a pair often reach the point where both need attention in the same few years. The Diggers Rest VEU gas to electric page explains the conversion that replaces the heater with a ducted reverse cycle system and settles the cooler question at the same time, and the Diggers Rest air conditioning page covers refrigerated cooling for households that want it.
Hot, dry plains summers
Diggers Rest shares Sunbury's weather: plenty of hot, dry days each summer, which is exactly what an evaporative cooler is built for and exactly why the pads, pump and water system do a lot of hours. A clean every year, rather than every second year, is what keeps a cooler here cooling through February.
Two kinds of homes
The older township streets around the station have coolers of every age, some well past twenty summers, while the newer estates such as Bloomdale have units that are still young but were fitted into tight, shallow roof spaces. On a township cooler the question is usually condition; on an estate cooler it is usually access and duct layout. We plan the visit for whichever you have, so tell us when you book.
Dust off the paddocks
Diggers Rest sits between farmland and the Calder, and on windy days dust settles into pad frames and tanks. Dusty pads pass air without cooling it and a dusty tank blocks the pump, so cleaning the tank and checking the water distribution across every pad is not skipped on a Diggers Rest service.
A young town with old heaters
Many Diggers Rest homes were built with a gas ducted heater and an evaporative cooler as a pair. When the heater is due at the same time as the cooler, the conversation changes: a ducted reverse cycle conversion under the VEU program heats and cools through its own ducts and settles the cooler question too. We explain both paths at the site visit.
Close to home. Diggers Rest is part of our home service area, so service bookings here are easy to arrange and we can usually be flexible on times.

What happens next
Evaporative cooling in Diggers Rest: your questions
What does a Diggers Rest evaporative cooling service include?
The tank is drained and cleaned, the pads are inspected and cleaned or quoted for replacement, the pump and the float and dump valves are tested, water distribution across every pad is checked, the fan and motor are tested under load, the controller and electrical connections are checked and the unit is run through every mode with the airflow checked at the outlets. You get a written note of anything that will need attention. Book online and the website booking price shown above applies.
My estate home's cooler is only a few years old. Does it need a service?
Yes, and the first service is often the most useful one, because it catches installation shortcuts such as a dump valve that was never connected or ducts that were crushed when the roof was insulated. After that, once a year before summer.
The cooler is on a two storey house. Is that a problem?
No. Roof access on a two storey home takes the right ladders and safety equipment, which our technicians bring as standard. Tell us what you have when you book and our office confirms the details with you.
Is an old township cooler worth repairing?
Often yes for a pump, pad set or motor on a sound unit. If the cabinet has gone brittle, the tank leaks or the control board is obsolete, we tell you a changeover is the better spend and quote a new cooler sized for the house. We do not sell you a service on a cooler that will not see the summer out.
Do you cover Bulla and Toolern Vale as well?
Yes. Diggers Rest, Bulla, Toolern Vale and Clarkefield are all covered at the same price.
