Evaporative cooling in Woodend

Woodend is a heating town first, but the summers here are dry and an evaporative cooler is a very good way to cool a Woodend house. The trouble is the other eight months. A cooler is a wet appliance that lives on a roof: water sits in a tank, is pumped over pads and evaporates into the air that flows through the house. Through a Woodend winter that water goes stale, frosts perish the rubber parts, minerals set on the pads and leaves and dust settle in the tank. Left alone for a few seasons the cooler starts to smell, cools a little less each year and eventually fails on the first hot week, when every heating and cooling company in Victoria is flat out.

An annual spring service resets all of that. We are in Woodend every week, so it is an easy booking.

What our technicians do on a service visit

Our technicians are our own employees, factory trained on Brivis and experienced with Braemar, Bonaire, Coolair and Breezair equipment. On every Woodend cooler they follow the same checklist:

  • Clean the unit. Tank drained and cleaned, cabinet and grilles cleaned, leaves, bark and debris removed from the pad frames.
  • Pads. Inspected for mineral build-up, blockage and damage. Cleaned where they are serviceable, quoted for replacement where they are not.
  • Water system. Pump tested under load, float valve checked and adjusted, drain or dump valve checked so the unit empties between uses, water distributor checked for even coverage across every pad.
  • Fan and motor. Bearings and drive checked, motor current tested, fan speeds verified.
  • Electrical and controls. Connections checked, controller functions tested, timer and fan modes verified, fault history read on units that store it.
  • Run and report. Full run through all modes, airflow checked at the outlets, and a written summary of what we found.

We tell you the price before we start and quote any parts, such as pads, before we fit them.

Repairs and diagnostics

If the cooler has already stopped, or is showing a fault, tell us the symptom when you book and we will send a technician with the likely parts. The Woodend repairs we do most are floats and dump valves that have perished over winter, pumps that have stopped lifting water, controllers that will not respond, and pad sets that have gone hard. We fix coolers that are worth fixing. When a unit has a cracked cabinet, a leaking tank or a control board nobody supports any more, we say so and talk you through a changeover instead of charging for repairs that will not hold.

If you are changing the heating

Many Woodend households keep their evaporative cooler when they replace the gas heater, because dry-day cooling from a cooler is cheap and the heating decision is the one that matters here. If you are considering a full gas to electric conversion, the cooler can stay or be removed, decided after inspection, because the new system cools through its own ducts, and we will explain both paths at the site visit.

Local knowledge

What we see in Woodend

Eight months on the roof in the frost

A Woodend cooler runs for a shorter summer than one in Sunbury and then sits through hard frosts for the rest of the year. The faults that produces are different: perished float valves and seals, water left in the tank over winter, pads that have dried out and gone hard, and a musty start-up smell in November. A spring service is where all of that gets caught.

Dry summers, good cooling

Woodend summers are dry, which is the weather evaporative cooling is built for. A properly serviced cooler here cools a whole weatherboard house on a 35 degree day for a fraction of the running cost of refrigerated air, which is why so many Woodend households keep theirs even when they change the heating.

Trees, leaves and the pads

Many Woodend homes sit under established trees, and a cooler on a roof under a gum collects leaves, bark and dust in the pad frames and tank. Those units need the pads and water distribution cleaned properly each year, not hosed off, or they lose airflow and cooling by mid-summer.

Period homes and high ceilings

Woodend's period weatherboards have high ceilings and larger air volumes than a modern estate home of the same floor area. When a cooler on one of these homes never quite keeps up, it is sometimes undersized rather than faulty, and we tell you that rather than keep charging for visits.

A regular run for us

Woodend is about 25 minutes from our Sunbury base and one of our busiest towns, so getting a technician out for a service or a breakdown rarely means a long wait.

What happens when you book

From your call to a working system

We aim to get a local technician to you as quickly as possible, often same or next day where availability allows.

  1. You contact us

Call 1300 369 400 or send the form with what the system is doing.

  2. We book it in

You get a confirmation, then arrival-time information the day before.

  3. Technician on the way

A text when your local technician is heading to you.

  4. Diagnosed properly

One of our own in-house technicians finds the actual fault, not the first symptom.

  5. Fixed on the spot where practical

We carry a broad range of common parts and aim to repair the fault there and then where practical.

  6. Options explained

If the fix is bigger, we explain the options and the price before any work goes ahead.

Factory-trained dealers

Evaporative Cooling in Woodend: your questions

What does an evaporative cooling service include?

We drain and clean the tank, inspect and clean the cooling pads or quote replacements if they are past it, check the pump, float valve and drain or dump valve, check water distribution across the pads, test the fan and motor, check the electrical connections and controller, run the unit through a full cycle and give you a written note of anything that will need attention.

My cooler smells when it starts up after winter. Is that normal?

It is common after a Woodend winter, and it is usually stale water left in the tank or a build-up on the pads. The service cleans the tank and pads and checks that the drain valve is actually emptying the unit between uses. If the smell comes back after a service, the pads are generally due for replacement.

When should I book?

September or October. Woodend's heat arrives later than Sunbury's, but when it does every cooler in the district gets switched on in the same week and the breakdown calls start. Coolers serviced in spring are the ones that run all summer without a call-out.

Do you carry parts?

We carry the common parts for Brivis, Braemar and Bonaire coolers, including pumps, floats and pad sets for the popular models, so many Woodend repairs are finished on the first visit. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you the price and lead time before you commit.

Can you service my gas ducted heater at the same time?

Yes, and in Woodend it is a sensible pairing: the heater gets its service and carbon monoxide safety check before winter and the cooler gets its clean before summer, or both in the one visit if that suits you.
