Getting a split system right
A split system installation looks simple, and the parts that make it good or bad are mostly invisible once the covers are on. Sizing the unit for the room. Positioning the indoor unit so the room is comfortable rather than draughty. Placing the outdoor unit where it breathes and does not annoy anyone. Running pipework of the right size, pressure testing it, evacuating it properly before charging. Draining the condensate so it does not end up down the wall. Commissioning the unit so it does what the label says.

Sizing
We size on the room’s heat load: floor area, ceiling height, insulation, window area and orientation, and how the room is used. Undersized units run flat out on the hot and cold days you bought them for; oversized units short cycle, dehumidify poorly and cost more than they should. If you tell us the size you want and it is wrong for the room, we will say so.
Positioning
Indoor unit. Placed for airflow across the room, away from direct draughts onto beds and seating, with a sensible pipe route and a clean look on the wall. In bedrooms we favour positions that keep the airflow off the bed and the noise down.
Outdoor unit. Clear airflow, service access, away from bedroom windows and neighbours where possible, and mounted on a base, bracket or roof frame that suits the site. Condensate drained to somewhere it can go, not onto a path.
Systems we install
Mitsubishi Electric, where we have substantial hands-on installation experience, and ActronAir and Rinnai, for which we are factory-trained dealers who purchase directly from the manufacturers. We recommend a system for the room and the budget rather than listing everything we can order.
Two or more rooms
If you are pricing two or three split systems, look at a multi-head system first. One outdoor unit serving several indoor units is often tidier, quieter and better value, and for the whole house ducted reverse cycle may be the better answer.
The warranty
Our 9 year labour and workmanship warranty covers the installation: mounting, pipework, electrical, drainage and commissioning. The unit carries the manufacturer’s product warranty, which we handle for you.
What your written quote includes
- A site visit or detailed phone assessment to size the unit for the room and agree indoor and outdoor positions
- The recommended system and capacity with the reasoning
- Removal and disposal of any unit being replaced
- Indoor unit, outdoor unit, mounting, refrigerant pipework, electrical circuit and isolator, condensate drainage and covers
- Pressure test, evacuation and commissioning to the manufacturer's specification
- A walk-through of the controller and the 9 year labour and workmanship warranty in writing

Placement
Where the unit goes decides how the room feels
High on a wall that lets the air sweep the room, not straight down onto the bed or the sofa. Clear of curtains and cupboards, with the pipe run to the outdoor unit as short and as hidden as the house allows. We walk the room with you before anything is drilled.
Done properly
Pipework, electrical, drain and commissioning
Refrigerant pipework brazed, pressure-tested and evacuated by our ARCtick-licensed technicians; the electrical circuit and isolator installed by a licensed electrician with a certificate of electrical safety; the condensate drained with fall to a proper discharge point; and the unit run and checked before we leave.

Sized for your home, not a rule of thumb
We size heating and cooling from the home: floor area, ceiling heights, insulation, glazing, orientation and how the rooms are used. An oversized unit short-cycles and an undersized one runs flat out on the coldest and hottest days, which is exactly when you need it.
Outdoor unit positioned properly
Clearances for airflow and service access, a level base or bracket, noise considered for you and the neighbours, and a position that keeps pipe runs sensible. It is the difference between a unit that lasts and one that struggles every summer.
Refrigerant work done by licensed technicians
Pipework is brazed, pressure-tested and evacuated before charging, and the charge is set to the manufacturer's specification. Our technicians hold the ARCtick refrigerant handling licence the law requires.
Electrical supply done by licensed electricians
Reverse cycle systems need the right circuit, cable size and isolator at the outdoor unit, installed to AS/NZS 3000 by a licensed electrician with a certificate of electrical safety. We tell you up front if the switchboard needs work, rather than discovering it on installation day.

We are factory-trained dealers for ActronAir, Brivis and Rinnai and purchase equipment directly from these manufacturers.
We also install, service and repair all major heating and cooling brands, including Mitsubishi Electric.

9Year Labour & Workmanship Warranty
It applies to the installation work our own team does. Equipment is covered by the manufacturer's warranty, repairs and servicing carry their own workmanship warranty, and pre-existing or reused components are not covered by the nine years.
Questions we get asked
How do you decide the size?
From the room's floor area, ceiling height, insulation, glazing and orientation, and how the room is used. A north-facing living room with a wall of glass needs more than a bedroom of the same size. We size on the room and tell you if a bigger or smaller unit would serve you better.
Where should the indoor unit go?
Where the air can circulate the room without blowing directly onto the bed or the sofa, where the pipe run to the outdoor unit is sensible, and where it looks right. We agree the position with you before the day.
Where should the outdoor unit go?
Where it has clear airflow, can be serviced, does not sit under a bedroom window or next to the neighbour's, and where the pipe run is short. Ground mounts, wall brackets and roof mounts all have their place.
Can you replace my old split system with a new one in the same spot?
Usually, yes. We check the existing pipework and electrical rather than assume they can be reused; old pipework of the wrong size or condition is replaced.
Is there a VEU discount on a split system?
Replacing an old reverse cycle unit or an electric resistance heater with an approved high-efficiency split system can be eligible under the Victorian Energy Upgrades program. We check for you and quote approved equipment.
